WADDELL, Peter;
Occuli
1991
Oil on canvas
500 x 900mm
In the late 1980s and early 1990s Peter Waddell developed an interest in architecturalism, the term for a movement involving the painting of buildings, often on a monumental scale or, as here, concentrating on architectural details. Occuli (Latin for eyes) refers to the bullseye windows on the Queen Street façade of the 1911 Auckland Town Hall. Waddell’s paint has dramatically intensified both the Oamaru stone cladding of the building and the window treatments. Touches of ruby red in the stained glass heighten the theatrical element.
