This work was included in a 1985 solo exhibition at Denis Cohn Gallery. In a review in the Herald (6 May 1985), T. J. McNamara wrote:
‘The outstanding work is untitled (No. 1). It uses the cross motif that is found in most of Maddox’s previous work. The background on the right is a wash of blue and the work becomes progressively more dense towards the centre. The colour is vivid and the paint handling full of energy so that we take part fully in the making of the work.’
