Kyla Mackenzie, the leading authority on John Weeks, has noted, ‘Weeks was one of the most committed still life practitioners in New Zealand art. He was probably the most prolific male exponent of the floral still life (Thomas Arthur McCormack (1883–1973) is another contender). His still life imagery is more formally diverse than other subjects in his career and often features exploratory, shifting approaches.’[1] Like many of his paintings, this one is undated. Its more naturalistic style suggests it was painted in the 1930s, but this is not a certainty.
