Born in Fiji, studied at Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland from 1966–72. In 1974 he graduated from the Central school of Art and Design in London having pursued a course of advanced study in printmaking. From 1978 he taught printmaking at the Auckland Society of Arts and exhibited widely through out New Zealand as well as in Japan and Australia. Although the greater part of his work consists of etchings, he has also exhibited both pastels and paintings. His series of Arcadian Drawings were first exhibited at RKS in 1982. In 1983 a retrospective survey of a decade of Fumpston’s prints was mounted by the Sarjeant Gallery, Whanganui.
