BREES, Samuel Charles;

Palliser Bay, Wairarapa Bar, Baring Head &c

c.1844
Watercolour on paper
205 x 365mm

Small but dramatic, this watercolour is a fine example of the work of Samuel Charles Brees. It is one of a number of sketches produced by the surveyor–artist about 1844. A similar view is shown in Palliser Bay and the Sandbar of the Wairarapa in the National Library of New Zealand Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa (B-031-019). There is a pencil sketch on the reverse of the work.
