May Smith was saddened by the loss of so many historic villas during the building of the motorway system in central Tāmaki Makaurau from the mid 1960s. Many of her paintings of the period lovingly record Victorian architectural detailing on verandahs, gables and around windows. This watercolour shows a lone block of dense housing in Newton Gully soon to fall victim to the bulldozer.
