This work was painted in the Kākahi area near Taumarunui, where Peter McIntyre had a fishing cottage on the Whanganui River. It illustrates what Professor John Roberts has called McIntyre’s ‘modest romantic realism’, which links the artist with the style that dominated English painting between the two World Wars, rather than with any specifically Aotearoa art movement.
