This work comes from Hanly’s Condition series and was first shown in 1976. In such works, the artist moved away from the figurative to a form of abstraction expressive of moments of sharply intense emotional experience. The subtitle of the Auckland exhibition at RKS in which this painting was first shown was Rejoice in All Things.

Another work titled Ecstasy Condition: Passion (1975), held by the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, is illustrated in Gregory O’Brien (ed.), Hanly (Tāmaki Makaurau: Ron Sang Publications, 2012), 176.

The Fletcher Trust Collection is one of the largest curated private collections of Aotearoa art. The Trust makes works available online as well as via exhibitions initiated by public art institutions and by the Trust itself.
