BAMBURY, Stephen;
Column (To Brâncuși)
1984
Acrylic polymer and pigment on canvas
2370 x 280 x 120mm
Works such as this were produced by the artist following his second trip to the United States of America in 1984. They are painted on shaped canvasses with tapered sides and divided by colour into two triangular zones. The painted join angled across the images generates a tension by seemingly twisting the shapes in space. In this work, the first of six columns, homage is paid to the great Romanian modernist sculptor Constantin Brâncuși.
