SPENCER-BOWER, Olivia;

Central Otago

c.1940
Watercolour on paper
410 x 560mm

Inscriptions: Olivia Spencer Bower [l.r.]

Olivia Spencer-Bower was one of the watercolourists of the Canterbury School. She trained at the School of Art in Christchurch, the Slade School in London, and at Elam in Auckland. Her loose style of paint application was admired when she first started to exhibit and proved to be an influential factor among her contemporaries. This painting is typical in its subject matter and sharp definition, and shows clearly the artists considerable skill in depicting the effects of bright sunlight on the landscape.

The Fletcher Trust Collection is one of the largest curated private collections of Aotearoa art. The Trust makes works available online as well as via exhibitions initiated by public art institutions and by the Trust itself.
