Jude Rae was born in Sydney. She studied at the University of Sydney between 1976 and 1980 and graduated from the New South Wales Institute of the Arts with a Diploma in 1984. She completed her Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Canterbury’s Ilam School of Fine Arts in 1992 and continued living in Ōtautahi until 1995, when she moved to Tāmaki Makaurau. She later returned to Australia. She is today renowned as a painter of still lifes of extraordinary elegance and power, and as a portraitist.
