Rodney Fumpston studied at Elam School of Fine Arts from 1966 to 1972. In 1974, he graduated from the Central School of Art and Design in London, having pursued a course of advanced study in printmaking. From 1978, he taught printmaking at the Auckland Society of Arts and exhibited widely through out New Zealand, as well as in Japan and Australia. Although the greater part of his work consists of etchings, he has also exhibited both pastels and paintings. In 1983, a retrospective survey of a decade of Fumpston’s prints was mounted by the Sarjeant Gallery, Whanganui.
