Julian Dashper attended Elam School of Fine Arts, graduating in 1981. From 1980, he exhibited widely but was particularly associated with Peter McLeavey Gallery in Wellington. His work was included in Constructed Intimacies: Moët & Chandon Touring Exhibition 1989 and the 1992 exhibition Headlands: Thinking Through New Zealand Art at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney. Much of his work addresses painting and its histories, particularly the effects of distance and reproduction on painting in Aotearoa.
