Robert Atkinson settled in Tāmaki Makaurau in 1884. Like a number of other artists of the period, including Frank Wright and Walter Wright, Kennett Watkins, and Charles Blomfield, he operated a studio in Victoria Arcade. In 1890, he moved to Sydney.
