In 1980, Ray Thorburn undertook a Doctor of Philosophy at Ohio State University. An earlier interest in calligraphy resurfaced, stimulated in part by the artist’s experience of graffiti art in the New York City Subway. In 1984, he exhibited a series entitled PH & D: Piled Higher and Deeper. The series incorporated leaves from the 1982 calendar and holographs of pages from his PhD thesis.
