This work is part of a major series based on fishing boats at Lyttelton and Kaikōura that Rudolf Gopas worked on from around 1955 to 1970. The bold expressionistic brushstrokes and fragmented bright colours are typical of the style the artist practised and advocated through his teaching. The movement towards Abstract Expressionism that Gopas made in the 1960s can readily be seen within this painting.
