Here the artist has revisited a sketch he originally made in 1933, when Auckland’s central city streets were still lined with overcrowded and unsanitary Victorian houses. By 1976 they looked charming, the more so as their demolition proceeded. Arthur Thompson’s watercolour captures the ambiguity.
