Produced when Toss Woollaston was living at Māpua, this work shows the hallmarks of the artist’s watercolours of the 1940s: scratchy pencil-work, patches of colour with minimal layering, and areas of exposed paper. The energetic, improvisational execution reinforces the vitality of the land depicted. As with Woollaston’s oils of the period, such as Candle and Fire, Upper Moutere, Nelson from Māpua features an earthy and relatively naturalistic palette.
