Living for Today

Alkyd on aluminium, 16 pieces

In 1978 Killeen began the cut-out paintings for which he is best known. Each is made up of shaped and painted aluminium which could be hung on the wall in a random grouping. Although there is a parallel with Matisse’s cut-outs, Killeen’s have no fixed compositional order. Thus the viewer is allowed a greater range of options in approaching the work; there can be no set narrative, no fixed order, instead an allusiveness which is upsetting to those who expect painting to tell them what to think and how to respond.
