BOSWELL, James;
Kentish Town
1948
Ink and pastel on paper
400 x 560mm
This drawing was long titled Winchelsea Station in error. According to the artist’s daughter, Sally Shuel, it in fact depicts Kentish Town. A related work, Café, Kentish Town (1947), is at Tate (T03463). The catalogue entry notes, ‘… although it is not drawn from life and is not of any actual place in particular, it is composed of impressions of neighbouring Camden Town which were assembled to form the work. … Boswell would collate impressions, imaginary elements and details with private significance, in order to produce street scenes of this type.’
A similar sketch by Boswell, Camden Town, is also in the Fletcher Trust Collection.
