Oil on board
900 x 700mm
This work is significant in that it is part of a major series Gopas worked on from around 1955 to 1970 which was based on fishing boats at Lyttleton and Kaikoura. The bold expressionistic brushstrokes and fragmentation of bright colours are typical of the style the artist practised, and advocated through his teaching. The movement towards Abstract Expressionism which Gopas made in the 1960s can be readily seen within this painting.
